The Brimal LF100 will go a long way to help stop the damage to all DCC controlled circuits such as controllers and decoders. DCC systems are rarely perfect in their square wave outputs and have both overshoot and peaking that distorts the waveform. Spikes can be caused by CDUs of all types, auto-reversers, accidental overloads, or short circuits which make your system try to reset many times. This causes severe high voltage spikes at the track that will inevitably shorten loco and accessory decoder life, and causing general harm to many 
electronic components.

Line Filters are not polarity sensitive so there is no incorrect way to wire them, one terminal for each of the two wires from the controller
